How to fix this situation on Replication?[Urgent.]
I by mistake Overwrites distribution DB.
Server1 and Server2 replicates each other.
Applications are using Server1, and Server2 is back up purpose.
When server1 fails application redirected SErver2, using same data since there is replication.
Server2 had distribution DB.
Now there is no distribution DB.. it's messed up...
I want to restore replication between Server1 and Server2.
I tried to make replication from Server1, I got errors..
How can I do this? What kind of errors?

I got this idea from a related thread, but they used a NETWORK user that is obsolete in 2007.
I found that you have to edit the actual file properties on the ASPNETDB.MDF and ASPNETDB.LDF files so that the ASPUSER has full access. i.e. on the file properties, security tab, hit the Add button and type in ASP.NET then return. Back at the security properties, click on the 'Full Control' checkbox at the top. That took care of it for me.
This was after checking the IIS control panel for the properties on the folder that contained my application and App_Data folders to be sure that the "Write" checkbox was already checked, it was

My project is a webservice that I created with Studio 2005, in the default configuration if you have a database, its put into an APP_DATA folder in your webservice folder.
Its in that folder where the ASPNETDB.MDF and LDF files are located and it is there where the permissions must be set in this case. As I am serving files from a virtual directory I setup in IIS, the permission apply to the actual file location on my computer. The same would be true, though, if the files were copied to the wwwroot/myWebService/APP_DATA folder on the actual default web site on my computer.
To directly answer your question, the MDF and LDF files are the actual database file and log file for the SQL Express database that I'm using for my application. When creating a SQL-using project in Studio 2005, the system will automagically make these for you within your project and you can then access them directly in your APP_DATA folder. So as to your question about server or user instances, I am not sure that it applies as this is a SQL Express install (the free one from microsoft); maybe that corrsponds to a user instance in your environment (?)
Perhaps someone else on this thread knows exactly what you're talking about

error in run-time, but now it won't work in design-time. The DataSet
visualizer can't find the datasource from the given connectionString.
This is using the Application project template for WebService and not the
Website template. That may be part of the problem.

Thanks for your response.
I recommend that you try to connect the SQL Server Express on other clients
via SQL Query Analyzer or other SQL client tools. If you manage to access
the server, this issue is most likely caused by some settings in your
Webservice IDE (vs.net 2005?). You can post this issue to .net public
community for best support.
Also, for now, I recommend that you check your connection string, by
default the SQLExpress instance name should be set to "<server
name>\SQLEXPRESS".

Just checking in to see if the suggestions were helpful. Please let us know

Charles Wang
Microsoft Online Community Support|||Charles,
Thanks, but no. Those suggestions seem to address a different issue. I
think what's happening here is that when using the non-website project
template for ASP.Net Webservice (downloaded from Microsoft's site) the
connection string contains an extra "APP_DATA" directory literal.
At design time, this is the correct setting and the dataset designers can
find and connect to the database correctly, but at runtime the "APP_DATA"
literal is /extra/ because the "|DataDirectory|" placeholder is resolved
differently to already include the APP_DATA folder.
I'm posting these findings to save others from frustration, but I've in fact
changed direction.

My former reply may not understand your issue clearly. I thought it was
just a normal SQL Server break/fix issue on connection.
This issue is most likely a .net development issue.I recommend that you
post this issue to public .net newsgroups for best professional support.

See "Renaming a Server" and "Changing Passwords and User Accounts" in Books
Online - they list the steps to follow. If you didn't change the account
that MSSQL is running under, then you should only need to look at the first
section.

how to fix report layout problems
When you use Report designer in the BI development studio, on the Preview tab, you can have a straight preview or a print layout preview. I suppose what you see in the print layout preview is what you get when you print the report or export the report to the other format.
However, often you see everything looks perfect in a straight preview but does look right in the print layout preview. For example, you might get the following problems in the print layout preview, even if everything looks perfect in a straight preview.
· Every even page is a blank page
· Items that should be together on the same page are separated into different pages. For example, on the first page, I had a TextBox1 followed by Image1 then followed by TextBox2. Both textboxes have constant (static) values, and Image1 holds a jpg image. Strangely enough, when I do print layout preview, I saw both textboxes and blank space in-between on the first page, and then saw the image on the second page. No matter how I adjust and what I adjust (position, size, bring to front, send to back, ... etc), I just could not get them into the same page, and I have no clue why.
Can anyone provide some suggestions, advices, experience, knowledge, or pointers?
Where and what elements should I look into to fix the layout problems stated above?
Thanks in advance.
Chris in Toronto
Hi There,
It's probably a problem with page width. Your report is too wide to fit on a single page, and so the right hand edge will be carved off into a new page, hene every other page is blank or your data is split across pages.
The report should be something like 21cm by 29.7cm (sorry, I can't remember the inch equivalents). And the body should be about 18cm wide. (at least these measurements certainly fit on a sheet of A4 in one of my reports).
Cheers - Andrew.|||
I have already considered the page width.
No matter how I adjust the page width, it does not fix the two problems that I described.
Thanks anyway.
|||When you looked at the page width vs. body width, did you consider the size of the margins? This blog article might help:
http://blogs.msdn.com/chrisbal/archive/2006/08/10/694892.aspx
This situation is the only one I'm aware of that will reliably cause every other page to be blank in physical page layout renderers.

How to fix postion of report itme?
I put a list at the body of report. At the top of the list, it displays general information of invoice, like invoice no., customer name, address, page no....., I want those information print on the top of every page. In the middle of list, I use a table to display invoice details, it may have many lines and longer than one page. At the bottom of the list, I want to display some terms and condition and draw a line for signature.
I want to know how to fix the position of report items in the list? I want to repeat the beginning part (general information) of the list on every page, and print the terms and signature part at the end of an invoice (not on every page for multi paged invoices), and at the bottom of a page (signature must be printed at the bottom of a page, and end of an invoice, not every page). Does RS have similar functions fix report item location? like print at the top / at the end of a page, repeat header on every page in Crystal Reorts?
Thank you very much!!I'm also having this issue. I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way to fix information to the bottom of the page/report.|||
Can't you just use Page Headers and Footers for the Report Title and Signature section?

Thank you very much!!
I'm also having this issue. I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way to fix information to the bottom of the page/report.

How to fix performance degredation
Over time, my nightly process is slower and slower as the size of the DB grows (now 15GB) and larger amounts of data need to be put in using insert/update SQL statements (by the way we are using Cognos DecisionStream).
Does anyone have any suggestions for me as to how to shrink the overnight processing time for the refresh, or what is the best way?
At this point, deleting old data is not an option. On the table are the following options, what are the best in your experiences and what do you suggest?
1. Upgrade server #2, so it is powerful as server #1.
2. Buy a 3rd server and do even more load balancing to have more of the refresh running at the same time.
3. Use another DB instead of SQL, like Oracle, DB2, etc.
Any answers are greatly appreciated.
Lastly, for #2 above (adding a 3rd server), can SQL server handle multiple servers running update processes to the same DB? Will I even decrease the times at all by adding servers and load balancing, or will the increased load from 3 servers to one DB slow all of them down too much?
THANKS!uhhhh, do you have any clue what the bottleneck is here? What do your performance monitor counters look like? During this run time, look at the processor utilization, network utilization, disk queue lengths on both servers, memory utilization, buffer cache hit ratios, etc. What do they tell you?
Also, run profiler and see if you can see where you're getting table scans, slow running pieces, etc. The answer isn't usually to throw more hardware. It to do performance tuning.|||I suspect the bottleneck is related to adding more data, bigger fact tables, and this combined with the update/insert statements. These are the processes that are really slowing down.
I have not done any performance monitoring or profiling. Where do I set up Perf. monitor, is this in SQL server? Can I look at the logs the next day, or are these monitors used to look at real-time. My refresh starts at 9pm and goes until 5am. Profiler is in SQL server, right?
Do you have any suggestions, or can you forward me to documentation as to how to best set up the monitoring (so that doesn't use up a lot more than I need to), analyze the logs and change settings?
THanks.|||You can look at www.sql-server-performance.com . Performance Monitor is a utility that comes free with Windows. Profiler comes with SQL Server.sql

How to fix DT_Text and DT_NText Read Only in Script Component
I have a script component that I have written and works as long as the Output columns on the script are string types. When I change the output column type to text (since the size could be essentially unlimited) it gives an error in the script component that the property is read only.
Here is the code line that fails with Property Payments is read only.
Output0Buffer.Payments = fieldValues(i)
If I change the column payments to DT_Wstr it works without issue, but I want to use text incase the value is large.
Here is the error if you try to run the actual script even though I know it has an error.

Try explicitly calling SetString() on the column. Any better?
Thanks

The reason it doesn't work is that Blob data types have a different interface in pipline script components.
Then, to set to value to a text field (DT_TEXT or DT_NTEXT) in a pipeline script component, use AddBlobData(), as in:
Imports System.Text
...
Output0Buffer.Payments.AddBlobData(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(SomeStringHere))|||I had just figured it out before this post.. but my code was way worse... yours works well and is clean. Thanks!
How to fix dbcc checkcatalog error (Msg 3853)
error when running dbcc checkdb (which runs dbcc checkcatalog):
Msg 8992, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Check Catalog Msg 3853, State 1: Attribute (role_principal_id=16384) of row
(role_principal_id=16384,member_principa
l_id=1) in sys.database_role_members
does not have a matching row (principal_id=16384) in sys.database_principals
.
From what I've read, dbcc checkcatalog errors cannot be fixed automatically.
Usually you have to re-create the object. But most of what I've seen on this
error refers to tables and stored procedures, things that are more easily
re-creatable.
How do I figure out what role is causing the problem and then how can I
resolve the error?
Thanks.I haven't seen this error before but it seems to indicate that the db_owner
role is missing. Do you see db_owner when you execute:
SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals
Hope this helps.

SQL2000 databases using the detach/attach method. One database has all the
proper roles (and db_owner is principal_id 16384) but the other two are
missing all of the 16xxx principal_id roles.
The databases seem to be working fine (they are for PeopleSoft applications)
even without those roles.
What can I do to fix this?

In the good ole days, I'd have recommended some at-your-own-risk system
table hacking. This isn't allowed in SQL 2005 so your only options are to
either contact Microsoft support or copy your users and objects to new
databases you know to be good.
It would be nice to know how this happened. If you still have old copies of
the SQL 2000 db files around, that might help diagnosis.
Hope this helps.

How to fix corrupt database?
Hello,
I am trying to run the example program: Coding4Fun: Building a Family History Web Service at this URL
http://msdn.microsoft.com/coding4fun/xmlforfun/familyhistory/default.aspx
The project has an SQL Express database Family.mdf. When I try and open Family.mdf in VS 2005, I get this error:
'FAMILY.MDF' cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database.
I can create a new database, but then the stored procedures will be lost.
Any suggestions how to repair the database?
Thanks
That database was based on a beta build. Beta build were not supposed to be supported after the RTM version is launched. í dont′think that there is a upgrade path for this internal version to the RTM version. If you still have a beta SQL Server 2005 (Yukon) you can try to attach the db to that one and script the structure out.HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.
http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||
Hello Jens,
Thanks for taking time to reply to this question. I dont have a beta version of SQL 2005, so I guess I will have to just create a new database.
Thank you,
Tom
How to fix ASPNET "Login failed" problem with MSDE
* !! Change MYCOMPUTER below to the appropriate name of your computer !!
* Open a command prompt
* Type: C:
* Type: cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn" (or the exact location of the file "osql.exe" if different)
* Copy/paste the following commands
osql -E -S localhost -Q "sp_grantlogin 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"
osql -E -S localhost -d Orders -Q "sp_grantdbaccess 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"
osql -E -S localhost -d Orders -Q "sp_addrolemember 'db_owner', 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"Thanks for the "straight" approach! A side note to those of you who used named instances (like I did), I needed to change 'localhost' to 'myCompName\namedInstance'
Do you think there could be any reprocussion by having the ASPNET user as the db_owner?|||I have had some problems getting the ASPNET account to connect to SQL 2000, see following for details:
http://www.asp.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?tabindex=1&PostID=8328
I have given the ASPNET account access via EM, but it didn't help any.
So I decided to try your approach and some really strange things happened which leads me to believe my SQL 2000 is a total mess. Hopefully I am wrong.
When Trying:
osql -E -S localhost -Q "sp_grantlogin 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"
I get:
Granted login access to 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'.
Seems reasonable !
When Trying:
osql -E -S localhost -d Orders -Q "sp_grantdbaccess 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"
I get:
Msg 15023, Level 16, State 1, Server MYCOMPUTER, Procedure sp_grantdbaccess, Line 127
User or role 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET' already exists in the current database.
Seems reasonable since I allready did this from within EM
But then when trying:
osql -E -S localhost -d Orders -Q "sp_addrolemember 'db_owner', 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'"
I get:
Msg 15410, Level 11, State 1, Server MYCOMPUTER, Procedure sp_addrolemember, Line 66
User or role 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET' does not exist in this database.
WHAT IS UP WITH THAT ?|||Here is what I know (I will illustrate with my real world example).
I have an asp.net web app deployed on the server with .net installed to run services. As you found out, when you install .net, a LOCAL user accout is created, named ASPNET.
Anyways, my web app running on .net machine A, needs to do a sql connection to machine B, running sql server 2000.
I could NOT find a sql connection string that would ALLOW this local machine user ASPNET, to connect "trusted" to the sql server on machine B.
Fix: On machine B (sql server) I created a user account ASPNET and assigned it password. I then gave this new user access to the DB & Tables I required, no others! (read, write, and ownership I recall).
Now, In my connection string I something like this:
SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection("Data Source=MACHINE_B;Initial Catalog=MY_DB;User ID=ASPNET;Pwd=PASSWORD;Connect Timeout=4800;");
So, my connection will use sql authentication, not machine authentiaction. Its the only solution I have found, I hope this is what the hell your talkin.|||Well I have tried both machine and sql authentication without luck. Obviously there is something messed up since the user is not recognized|||I finally solved my problem. It ended up being a file permission problem (NTFS), but not in a place I would have suspected. I discovered the problem file by using the filemon program from sysinternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml
The program showed me which files had access denied. I can highly recommend this program if you encounter permission issues.
The problem file was: c:\winnt\system32\com\comadmin.dll
After giving the ASPNET account read access to this file everything worked.
I am assuming that I had this problem because I have used various tools to lock down my deployed server (file permission wise etc.)|||E if I use FAT32|||Had the same problem when installing MSDE on a 2k-server with domain.
I think this is the first MSDE that installs on servers? The problem seems
to be that MSDE creates a LOCAL-USER account for 'MYCOMPUTER\ASPNET'.
This user is not available when loged in to the servers' DOMAIN? At least
not if LOCALSERVER is also DOMAIN-server (no LOCAL-users alowed)!
The user must be 'MYDOMAIN\ASPNET'
Fix DOMAIN and recompile applicaton? No problem on 2kPRO on DOMAIN...
Strange that MS don't have a distribution for SQL2k! Or is there one?
Per, Oslo, Norway.|||If you install MSDE from the Web Matrix download, it is installed under the LocalSystem account using windows integrated security by default.
Applications connecting to this msde instance will need to be running under a domain user account with administrative privileges. You can try running a domain user account with lessor privileges, but will then run into file access issues which will result in a connection failure.
Alternatively, you can install msde using sql security so you can connect that way. Use the /? setup flag to see the name=value pair for that. This will actually install in mixed mode, so either sql security or integrated security will work. be aware this installs with null sa password, so be sure and create a secure sa password before starting the sql server service.
With a named instance, you must use the machine name and instance name. so if your machine name is foo, and instance name is bar, you use foo\bar

Thank you very much. I've been looking for this information for days, and these commands were exactly what I needed.|||Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can quit tearing out my hair and get back to work now.
This worked perfectly.|||How do I correct the problem when the I have the following messages:
"The RPC Server is to busy to complete this operation"
Error 1723: The RPC Server is to busy
This Snap-in display maybe in consistant with removable Storage Service. If the problem persist please restart the snap-in
The problem have disallowed access to control panel and and my connection the internet cannot be accessed.
How do I fix the problem or step by step remove ASPNEt and reinstall?
Regards
Fred|||Thanks, this worked for me as well. Only thing I had to change was localhost to hostname\INSTANCENAME.
Thanks again.|||Hate to tell you guys this, but it really isn't recommended to give the ASPNET account access to the database, especially as dbowner. This raises all kinds of security issues.
Use mixed mode, you'll make your life a lot easier. Typically in any type of large Web app, your SQL Server is on a completely different server. Windows Integrated Security won't work in this scenerio anyway because IIS does not delegate user credentials to a remote server. In other words, even if the account requesting the page from IIS has permission to your SQL Server, IIS isn't going to pass the credentials on in a way that SQL Server will allow the user to connect. So you are back at the same problem unless you run your components inside COM+ services or do other more advanced security within your components.
I'm a little frustrated that people keep asking the same questions over and over when there are plenty of good answers here in the forums if you take the time to look.
Other than using mixed mode, the other thing to remember is that MSDE is installed in Windows Integrated Security mode by default and you either have to use the switch on the install as Michael points out or connect using Enterprise Manager to MSDE and change the security mode, as Michael, I and others have pointed out repeatedly. Please people, READMEs are there for a reason. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.
Curtis|||Thanks to Michael and skills0!!
I've managed to figure out which property needed to be changed at setup to enable mixed mode and found a really easy way to set it up (without using Enterprise Manager).
Just add "SECURITYMODE=SQL" to your setup.ini file in the msde setup folder and then run setup.
Now, I just have to figure out how to change sa's password ;)
How to fix an orphaned alias?
backup/restore. Of course there were some problems with mapping of
userid to logins. That was solved by running sp_change_users_login.
But one problem remains. I had one userid that I had aliased to dbo.
That userid is not listed when using sp_change_users_login 'report' and
it is not possible to drop the alias either.
How can I fix this problem? Delete the userid manually from sysusers or
what?Do you by "alias" mean created with sp_addalias?
If so, can you remove it using sp_dropalias?

Yes, the user was aliased to the dbo using sp_addalias. sp_dropalias
doesn't work (probably because the sid doesn't match the sid for the
login).
Note: The database was moved from one server to another server so that
is why I have a problem with users in database does not match the server
logins.|||> sp_dropalias

Ahh. How about creating a login with the correct SID so the alias matches something and then try
sp_dropalias? Also, note that aliases has been deprecated since 7.0, so you should plan for stop
using them. :-)
